Haunted Hotel The Martha Washington Inn

Haunted Hotel The Martha Washington Inn

Some of the creepiest stories surround the Martha Washington Inn. This hotel is located in Abingdon, VA. This hotel was built in 1832 by General Francis Preston, hero of the War of 1812, for his family of nine children. The mansion remained in the Preston family possession until 1858, when it was sold to the founders of Martha Washington College. The look of hotel hasn’t change a lot during the years. It still has its charming look and its part of history, too.

Basements That are Scarier Than Any of the Ones You Remember From Childhood

Basements That are Scarier Than Any of the Ones You Remember From Childhood

As a child it seems that everybody has many overlapping fears. We all had unwarranted fears of monsters under our beds or creatures hiding in our closets, but perhaps the most common irrational childhood fear is the fear of the rooms that lied beneath the first level of our homes. People have feared basements for decades and I imagine that you would be hard pressed finding someone who has never felt creeped out while in a basement. Most of us believe that these fears are irrational, but here a couple of basements that may prove that we absolutely should fear basements.

Crazy George’s Bridge and the Witch’s Cemetery

Crazy George’s Bridge and the Witch’s Cemetery

There is something very comforting about a ghost story. This statement may sound like a contradiction but I consider it more of a paradox. Being frightened or scared is a feeling that most would consider uncomfortable, but it is an uncomfortability that most embrace and enjoy. How else do you explain the fact that nearly ever town has its own ghost story and I guarantee that we all, at one time or another, have heard or told a ghost story. There is something very comforting in the uneasiness of these frightening tales, something that takes a nostalgic grip over us and brings us back to a time when we were easily frightened by the shadows with unseen sources in our bedroom nightlights. These ghost stories take us back to a time before our rationale said that’s just the house making normal noises, instead our minds told us that something more was lurking in the dark, something frightening and unusual. Perhaps this is why I am fascinated with ghost stories, specifically stories that take place in the Upper Cumberland area of Tennessee, as that is where I grew up. These stories bring back memories from my own childhood, when my biggest responsibility was deciding if I was going to spend most of the day outside or playing video games and before my innocence was corrupted by the real world.

Hometown Hauntings

Hometown Hauntings

There are many haunted places around the globe, but I would like to focus on my home state of Ohio.

The first place I would like to mention is that of the Masonic Temple located in Kent. The reason I have started with this location is because even before I found out it was rumored to be haunted, I saw something strange one evening while driving through the neighborhood.

I often traveled through Kent and sometimes quickly admired the old home when I was driving past. It is a beautiful old home and definitely stands out amongst the other century homes on the block. I always found that property to be intriguing, but then again I have always had a fondness for old homes. In all its glory, it is beautiful but there was always something I found odd about it.

Urban Legends that are More Like Urban Facts

Urban Legends that are More Like Urban Facts

An urban legend is what one could call a modern folk tale.  It is not quite old enough story to be considered a folk tale so we call them urban legends.  Most of these legends are based on small fragments of fact with little to no truth to them, but there are a handful of urban legends that have their entire basis in reality.  Take these examples:

CIA vs. KGB—Psychic paranoia, mind control…

CIA vs. KGB—Psychic paranoia, mind control…

The sixties saw a lot of really radical changes: tie-dye, hallucinogenic drugs, general unkemptness—but it also ushered in an era of severe paranoia centered on the continuous conflict between the USSR and the good old USA. While this largely imagined competition for the biggest badass in business taught us a lot about overreacting, bomb threats (duck and cover!), and general suspicion, it also ushered in a very weird trend in government research—specifically, in how to create a psychic super weapon equal to or better than what the other guys supposedly had.

Do You Wanna Ouija?

Ah, the mysterious Ouija board. Talking boards, witch boards, Ouija boards… call them what you will but what happens when you use one?

Aunt Beulah

Aunt Beulah

The year was 1976 and summer vacation was on its way. My dad worked at the old Cannery just over the bridge while my mom stayed home to take care of my younger brother Jesse, he was ten at the time and me. I was twelve.

4 Strange Cults

4 Strange Cults

Cult-like behavior (read, religion) is one of humankind’s oldest preoccupations. Whether centered on God, gods, aliens, or energy forces, people have always been willing to believe and subsequently sacrifice for what they believe in. Here are a few of the strangest yet on record:

The 5 Scariest Urban Legends

The 5 Scariest Urban Legends

The Urban Legend can have its lineage traced all the way back to the earliest form of storytelling, when terrifying tales were traded around fires, either as a warning or for mere entertainment. The Urban Legend is a contemporary legend, a modern form of folklore or mythology which reflects the era’s fears or trepidations. While originally, like the original talks of folklore, they were passed around by word of mouth, modern technology has seen the distribution of tales taken on by the new forms of communication and media. The latest of these being used are the chain-email and the use of various social networking sites, which have been able to add an extra fear dynamic in the added clause that if the note is not forwarded to a certain number of people, some form of paranormal revenge will befall the ill-fated reader.
