5 Unexplained Discoveries

5 Unexplained Discoveries

It is somewhat difficult and a bit troubling for some to live in a world where science can explain just about anything thrown at it. Science has such an accurate understanding of our environment and the world around us that it seems to easily explain anything that wonders into its path, but there have been discoveries that have baffled even the best scientific minds and perhaps provide evidence of alien life, new species, or other variety of the paranormal. The Invisibles – Unseen Creatures

The Invisibles – Unseen Creatures

Humans rely a great deal on sight to live. The eyes are always seen as important whether they are metaphorical windows to the soul or simply the way to assess one’s surroundings. The movement to create special tools and instruments for the blind to get along by themselves without constant assistance by a loved one is relatively new as going blind (without gaining super powers of seeing into the future that is) really was seen as a slide into a lesser quality of life if not death all together since the person could not contribute much to the household as so much depends on sight. Therefore, creatures that can fool human sight—that is ones who can become invisible or are constantly invisible other than their actions on humans—can be considered to be a very scary concept. The innate fear humans have of the unknown or invisible is legend in itself. Yet, the creatures who make themselves unseen by human eyes are found in many cultures but tend to keep with the motif of being something to fear. They are playful tricksters in the least and downright dangerous at their worst. Either way humans tend to stay away from them if at all possible, meaning these “Invisibles” must seek out human interaction to play their tricks or bring their bad omens; and seeking out humans to engage with them becomes the specialty of these mythological and legendary invisible creatures. Five Monsters Rooted in Religion

Five Monsters Rooted in Religion

We’ve all had one of those nights—our really sweet babysitter told an awful bloodcurdling story, or we didn’t cover our eyes during the scary part of that movie when mom told us to, and all of a sudden it’s the middle of the night and you’re gripping your sheets over your head and sweating buckets, or running full speed down the hall to your parents room. However, most of us have been lucky enough to not have been subjected to this terror in church…or have we? Here’s a list of five monstrous creatures that actually come from religious texts and beliefs. Continue Reading

Crazy George’s Bridge and the Witch’s Cemetery

Crazy George’s Bridge and the Witch’s Cemetery

There is something very comforting about a ghost story. This statement may sound like a contradiction but I consider it more of a paradox. Being frightened or scared is a feeling that most would consider uncomfortable, but it is an uncomfortability that most embrace and enjoy. How else do you explain the fact that nearly ever town has its own ghost story and I guarantee that we all, at one time or another, have heard or told a ghost story. There is something very comforting in the uneasiness of these frightening tales, something that takes a nostalgic grip over us and brings us back to a time when we were easily frightened by the shadows with unseen sources in our bedroom nightlights. These ghost stories take us back to a time before our rationale said that’s just the house making normal noises, instead our minds told us that something more was lurking in the dark, something frightening and unusual. Perhaps this is why I am fascinated with ghost stories, specifically stories that take place in the Upper Cumberland area of Tennessee, as that is where I grew up. These stories bring back memories from my own childhood, when my biggest responsibility was deciding if I was going to spend most of the day outside or playing video games and before my innocence was corrupted by the real world. Things That Have Wings But Shouldn’t

Things That Have Wings But Shouldn’t

Throughout myths and legends there tend to be creatures with wings that are not seen that way in nature. The human fascination with flight is something that countless psychoanalysts and psychologists have looked into for centuries. However, simply put, it is something we can not do without mechanical help and something we could not do at all until the early part of the 20th century with the invention of the airplane—albeit poorly made airplanes that did not stay in the air for too long until the invention was refined to the mass commuter planes of the modern age. We can walk, run, carry things, swim, dive, and countless other things, but humans can not fly like the countless birds in the sky. Myths and legends seem to be a pallet for us to impart this desperate desire of our hearts by including other creatures that can not fly and do not have wings then going through the process of giving them wings, creating a whole new species by the addition of these magical feathers. All cultures around the world have the habit of putting wings onto animals who are born without them, making this dream of flight a universal one that transcends space and time. Let’s take a look back at these fantastic beasts. Continue Reading

Hometown Hauntings

Hometown Hauntings

There are many haunted places around the globe, but I would like to focus on my home state of Ohio.

The first place I would like to mention is that of the Masonic Temple located in Kent. The reason I have started with this location is because even before I found out it was rumored to be haunted, I saw something strange one evening while driving through the neighborhood.

I often traveled through Kent and sometimes quickly admired the old home when I was driving past. It is a beautiful old home and definitely stands out amongst the other century homes on the block. I always found that property to be intriguing, but then again I have always had a fondness for old homes. In all its glory, it is beautiful but there was always something I found odd about it. Depictions of Martians Through Time

Depictions of Martians Through Time

The red planet has always held a type of sway over Earth. Its mystical red glow attracted amateur stargazers who could see the shimmering rogue color when Mars was close enough to show its face in the night sky, the first astronomers with their weakly powered telescopes, science fiction writers, and astronomers in addition to astronauts of the modern age. While even early astronomers knew that Venus was technically closer to Earth in terms of mere miles between, Mars still always attracted more attention. We now know that Mars is the more likely candidate for exploration (and even very ancient single celled life forms) since Venus runs at roughly smoldering 1600 degrees Fahrenheit (900 degrees Celsius) and has enough pressure from its dense gas filled atmosphere and clouds to crush most of our spacecraft that could get us there while Mars has significantly low air pressure and is just very cold like the rest of space since temperature goes between -140 degrees Fahrenheit (-100 degrees Celsius) and 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius). Before we sent probes to actually investigate the surface of the planet—finding fossil evidence of microorganisms—mankind always thought that if there was life out there in the vastness of the universe then Mars would be a decent place to start looking. This thought made the imaginations and theorizing brains of humans go wild with anticipation about someday encountering Martians. Continue Reading

Urban Legends that are More Like Urban Facts

Urban Legends that are More Like Urban Facts

An urban legend is what one could call a modern folk tale.  It is not quite old enough story to be considered a folk tale so we call them urban legends.  Most of these legends are based on small fragments of fact with little to no truth to them, but there are a handful of urban legends that have their entire basis in reality.  Take these examples:

Best Ways to Get Rid of an Evil Spirit

Best Ways to Get Rid of an Evil Spirit

Every culture over every time period has stories of the spirits that roam the earth. This constant in human civilization leaves no room for doubt on the presence of spirits of the dead coming back to the human plane as an ethereal existence. According to all the stories, folklore, and witness testimonies, the world is full of spirits. Their method of interacting with the human world differs from spirit to spirit as well as their intentions though. Some are evil. Some are benign. Some are indifferent. However, the manifestation of a spirit who wishes to do harm to the living or is intentionally being a bother to living humans does happen from time to time. At the worst it can lead to outrageous fear and trouble and at the least annoyance to the humans the spirit chooses to haunt. Here is a list on how to get rid of any pesky spirits that you wish would leave you alone. Continue Reading

The Highgate Vampire

The Highgate Vampire

The 1960’s saw a definitive resurgence of occult obsession in mainstream pop culture. Therefore, it is not surprising that a correlative influx of supernatural sightings followed in the wake of the reemergence of paranormal phenomena in the public psyche (like alien/ UFO sightings after the release of “The War of the Worlds” in the 40’s). One of the single most sensationalized occurrences of this trend appears in the media phenomena following the Highgate Vampire. This occurrence retains, to this day, its mysterious reputation in occult circles as well as in the general public’s consciousness. So what really happened at Highgate? Continue Reading
