The Real Bell Witch Of Tennessee

The Real Bell Witch Of Tennessee

Part 1: The Beginning of a Haunting

The story of the Bell Witch has been a mainstay around campfires in the Tennessee area for many years. It is considered to be the most well documented haunting in American history. In 2005 the story received national attention when it served as the basis for the movie An American Haunting starring Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland. The movie, unfortunately, was not an accurate retelling of the story. It took the basics of the story and shoehorned it into a Japanese style ghost-revenge flick. The real story of the Bell Witch is far more interesting and frightening than the movie ever thought about being.

Some hauntings are known only in the places where they occurred and by a handful of people who truly believe in them. However, other interactions between the living and spirits of the dead have been far more popular and have been spread far and wide to the point where these ghosts and their stories become almost famous. One such legend is that of the Bell Witch (also known as the Bell Witch Haunting) from the folklore of the southern United States. The story of this haunting has been the inspiration for countless books and even modern movies like The Bell Witch Haunting of 2004 and An American Haunting from 2006. This renowned poltergeist revolved around the Bell family who were living in the tiny town of Adams, Tennessee during the early 1800s.

Based on A True Story: The Exorcist

There has yet to be a more popular and well-known horror movie as 1973’s The Exorcist. Movie patrons and critics alike praise the film and it is still considered to be one of the scariest movies ever made. The film and the book by the same name that the movie is based on appeal to a very primitive fear, a fear that has been exploited since the time of the poets Dante and Homer, the fear of death. More particularly, the fear of dying and going to hell. The Exorcists is based on a William Peter Blatty fiction novel, but the novel got its inspirations from a source that is based in reality, the exorcism of Robbie Mannheim.

The Scarf: A Ghost Story

The Scarf: A Ghost Story

It had been weeks since the accident, but it still felt fresh in my heart. As a collective, my boyfriend, his family, and myself had gone up to the high lake in honor of one of the last few glorious days of summer. It was so warm and bright. His parents had brought several outdoor cooking appliances to make a meal of hamburgers and hotdogs. We feasted. We laughed. The middle of the afternoon had brought a heavy wave of heat though. The air was so full of humidity and high temperatures that we could not resist one last swim in the chilly lake waters. We rented a small boat from the nearby marina and took turns climbing up the ladder and jumping off the back in attempt to splash anyone nearby. The fun could not last forever though. The sun started to set, and Shawn wanted to go for one more jump, one last dip. I climbed back onto the boat in attempt to coerce him back to shore with me. He did not listen.

The Thing in the Closet

The sudden lightning and crashing of the thunder woke little Billy out of a restless sleep. The rain clacking at the window like long wicked finger nails only added to the fright that held him paralyzed in his bed. Again another hit of lightning struck with a sudden crash of thunder following it. He could tell the storm was directly over his house now. The lightning and thunder exploded right outside his bedroom window as the rain poured down. When the lighting would strike Billy could swear that he saw things outside his window; Long, strange evil things with claws the size of daggers. “They’re only the trees. They have to be just the trees”. He said in an effort to console himself. He lay there watching the rain bang at his window as the tree things seemed to move closer. With every step the tree things took, Billy felt his strength to move slip away. “Close my eyes and count to ten. That will make it go away” Billy told himself in childish desperation. So he did. He closed his eyes and counted to ten. When he opened them to his horror the tree thing was now at his window. Its long, branch fingers were scratching at his window.

The 5 Scariest Urban Legends

The 5 Scariest Urban Legends

The Urban Legend can have its lineage traced all the way back to the earliest form of storytelling, when terrifying tales were traded around fires, either as a warning or for mere entertainment. The Urban Legend is a contemporary legend, a modern form of folklore or mythology which reflects the era’s fears or trepidations. While originally, like the original talks of folklore, they were passed around by word of mouth, modern technology has seen the distribution of tales taken on by the new forms of communication and media. The latest of these being used are the chain-email and the use of various social networking sites, which have been able to add an extra fear dynamic in the added clause that if the note is not forwarded to a certain number of people, some form of paranormal revenge will befall the ill-fated reader.
