How Do Places Become Haunted?

We all know that haunted places exist. That chill along your spine, the feeling of dread, and sudden drop in temperature are all physical signs that you experience in a haunted locale. However, how do places become this way? Some very famously haunted places have well known ghostly residents who have extensive stories about why their spirits linger in a particular place—such as a person who was wrongfully tortured into death or deeply betrayed by a dear friend or loved one that resulted in death. Many places tend to naturally draw ghosts simply because of what they are and what naturally happens in those places, meaning that prisons, hotels, and of course cemeteries are favorite haunting areas for the departed who have not fully moved on. Yet, some of the most common places that are haunted may not have such a specific story or might be just a seemingly random house. Where do these spirits come from and most importantly how do they make certain places their base of operations for haunting the living?

5 Historic Sites That Are Supposedly Haunted

5. The USS Hornet

The USS Hornet was a flagship vessel in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was one of the most highly decorated ships of that time period. She was also a pinnacle part of the Vietnam War and had the honor of recovering the astronauts returning from the moon in the Apollo 11 and 12 space missions. This success also has a dark side as this decorated warship has seen over 300 deaths. Most of which were men struck down in battle, but others died in freak accidents like snapping cables that decapitate sailors or men accidentally being sucked into air intake pipes. The hornet, for all its success, also has the highest suicide rate of all the ships in the Navy.

Sometimes, though, when one goes to these destinations, the trips can turn out to be less relaxing and more frightening.

The 5 Most Mysterious Places in The World

The 5 Most Mysterious Places in The World

When archeologists uncover a newly discovered city or artifact they look at other tangible evidence near the site to uncover what the artifact was used for or what life was like in the ancient city. They will look at records, cave paintings, or art to determine a way of life or they will do a sort of reverse engineering on the artifact to see what it was used for. This unfortunately is not always an option. There are some things left over from the ancient world and no evidence exists to suggest what the purpose of these artifacts were. This leaves the door wide open for multiple theories which often include human sacrifice, long lost religious ceremonies, or even visitors from outer space. Here are 5 such places. These are five of the most mysterious places in the world.

The Very Scary Eastern State Penitentiary

The Very Scary Eastern State Penitentiary

There are certain places well-suited for haunting. Prisons and insane asylums house tormented individuals who often die within the buildings that house them, causing them to become tormented souls within their former cells. Probably the most haunted prison in the United States, if not the world, is Eastern State Penitentiary, located in Pennsylvania. Built in 1829, it was the most expensive building ever built in the United States at the time, and it became the template for prisons around the United States. It was believed that those housed within the prison would look within themselves and find God during their imprisonment, but what actually happened is that those who were locked away in solitude eventually became insane. Within the prison, each cell had a table, a bed, a bible and a toilet. For 23 hours a day, prisoners were left in their cells and if they were leaving their cells, a black hood was put over their head so they could not see anyone else. Communication between prisoners was completely forbidden in an effort to cleanse the soul through solitude. Naturally, many inmates broke the rules and when they did, they met with horrible punishments.

Basements That are Scarier Than Any of the Ones You Remember From Childhood

As a child it seems that everybody has many overlapping fears. We all had unwarranted fears of monsters under our beds or creatures hiding in our closets, but perhaps the most common irrational childhood fear is the fear of the rooms that lied beneath the first level of our homes. People have feared basements for decades and I imagine that you would be hard pressed finding someone who has never felt creeped out while in a basement. Most of us believe that these fears are irrational, but here a couple of basements that may prove that we absolutely should fear basements.

The Banff Springs Hotel

The Banff Springs Hotel

Situated within the Rocky Mountains in Banff, Canada, surrounded by majestic peaks and beautiful landscapes, you would be surprised to know that the Banff Springs Hotel, now called the Fairmont Banff Springs, is one very haunted place. In fact, it is considered to be one of the most haunted places in all of Canada. Built in 1887, the Banff Springs was once a railway hotel constructed by Bruce Price over the course of 1887 and 1888. From the beginning, the hotel had odd features about it. For one, when it was built for $250,000, an error resulted in the hotel’s orientation facing away from the mountains. Originally built with 100 rooms, that was expanded in 1902 to 200 rooms, and it was not until 1914 when the hotel was completely renovated so that the rooms faced the mountains, rather than the other way around. The hotel has been the site of unfortunate fires, and royal visits and is considered to be one of the best places to stay not only in Canada, but North America. The hotel is located right near Bow Falls, and thermal springs, which is where the hotel gets its name from. You can also walk from the hotel to the community of Banff, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
