Highway to Hell

Highway to Hell

The concept of an afterlife has eluded almost all humans and the civilizations and cultures of which they are a part. We are intelligent enough to wonder what happens after life but cannot come up with a way to find out and come back to tell everyone—at least not a way that most people want to try in hopes of coming back to the land of the living. Most religions on Earth have some type of monopoly on the idea of the afterlife and try to tell followers about what happens after death and how to insure that this second life is a good and happy one. What about the “bad” people though? Human beings learned long ago that people can be bad, evil, and malicious without being punished on Earth for their crimes against humanity. To make these victims feel better, most of them like to believe in the idea that those who break cultural rules or deny the basic human rights of others are sent to a place where they will receive their eternal punishment for being such bad people while alive. In the Christianity of Western civilization, this place which collects and jails wrongdoers for eternity is known as “hell.” Yet, Christians were certainly not the first ones to come up with the thought that there was a place which was strictly reserved for those who did wrong in life but did not repent or correct their ways. Countless societies and religions all over the world have their own idea of a place where people are judged upon their deaths to pay for sins or evils during their time on Earth. Let’s go down the “Highway to Hell” and see what other mythological places exist to punish malevolent mortals.

In The Defense of The Paranormal

In The Defense of The Paranormal

More than any other field of study, the paranormal field gets scoffed. When I tell people that I write for a paranormal website I often get bombarded with comments like “do you actually believe in that stuff?” and half hearted “Oh, that’s cool. I guess”. But I believe that there is merit in studying the paranormal. By paranormal I mean the study of Extraterrestrials or UFOs, cryptozoology, and ghosts, though I will also be the first to admit that there are major flaws in how some areas of the field are researched.

Vampires Vs Ghosts

Vampires Vs Ghosts

The idea of a human corpse or body coming back to life or the spirit of one who has since passed on revisiting the realm of the living is not new. All cultures around the world have some form of this myth. Scholars (and even those who have strong common sense) have hypothesized that the prominence of these myths, legends, and stories is related to the human fear and wonder of what awaits beyond the land of the living. Having a loved one reanimate after their heart has stopped beating or the spirit of him or her return to inadvertently interact or even speak to the living is a very comforting thought to the family and friends of a recently deceased person. However, many tales of bodies moving around and performing actions after death or a spirit that has contact with living humans are actually rather frightening. Dead bodies coming back to life could be vampires who continue living off of human blood or zombies who live off of human flesh. Ghosts have a tendency to haunt the living or disturbing inanimate objects to scare humans or destroy a certain inhabited area. These two entities seem to make up two different parts of a human being—the vampire or zombie being the body and the ghost being the soul. The combination of the two might even make a living person again. However, since the concept of a zombie is a relatively modern one and is only seen in in the Voodoo religion, vampires are really the most dominant form of dead bodies that receive new life. Still, one must look into which is the better legend—the body (as vampires) versus the spirit (as ghosts).

The Philadelphia Experiment: A Crazy Conspiracy Theory… Or Is It?

The Philadelphia Experiment: A Crazy Conspiracy Theory… Or Is It?

The year is 1943 and the U.S. is knee-deep in World War II. The United States Navy is struggling to combat the German U-boat, struggling so much that they are losing ships daily to the Nazi naval forces. In a retaliation effort, the Navy begins Project Rainbow, a secret experimental program spearheaded by some of the most brilliant scientific minds in the world including Albert Einstein. The goal of this experiment is to render warships invisible. This is what proponents of the Philadelphia experiment conspiracy theory would have you believe happened anyway. But is their truth to any of it? What, if anything, happened in the Philadelphia naval shipyard in 1943?

Telepathy

Telepathy

Oral folklore and historic, native writings throughout the world all feature some form of the psychic phenomenon by which communication can occur between two different minds. This mind to mind communication can include actual words, ideas, or thoughts as well as simple feelings, mental pictures, and sensations. Calling this psychic communication by the name of “telepathy” is a relatively new term though. It was coined in 1882 by a French researcher known as Fredric Myers as a more scientific way to clearly classify these mental connections as “telepathy” is derived from the Greek “tele” which means “distant” and “pathe” which means “feeling” or “occurrence.” Different cultures have different takes on this mystical phenomenon. Some tribal groups, such as the Aborigines in Australia, believe that telepathy is a standard human faculty that all people can tap into and can perfect or hone through extensive practice. More technologically advanced societies like those of the Western world like to classify mind to mind communication as a special ability or gift that belongs specifically to psychics and mystical leaders. Either way, the fact that telepathy is so universally acknowledged leads people to at least have a curiosity about the truth of mental communication.

Top Ten Demons

Throughout history and geography, humans have believed in the presence of evil beings that roamed the earth. These malevolent spirits are seen in mythology, legends, occultism, and religion. The spread of Christianity throughout the world deepened the belief and expanse of demons, but many cultures have their own form of evil supernatural creatures that are considered even worse than the countless demons of Abrahamic traditions—meaning Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Looking into all the demons that invade the human realm though, some stand out as scarier or more evil than others. Here are the top ten malevolent spirits from different religions and various cultures around the world that humans need to keep away from if they want to avoid the terror these demons wreak upon humanity.

CIA vs. KGB—Psychic paranoia, mind control…

CIA vs. KGB—Psychic paranoia, mind control…

The sixties saw a lot of really radical changes: tie-dye, hallucinogenic drugs, general unkemptness—but it also ushered in an era of severe paranoia centered on the continuous conflict between the USSR and the good old USA. While this largely imagined competition for the biggest badass in business taught us a lot about overreacting, bomb threats (duck and cover!), and general suspicion, it also ushered in a very weird trend in government research—specifically, in how to create a psychic super weapon equal to or better than what the other guys supposedly had.

Cult-like behavior (read, religion) is one of humankind’s oldest preoccupations. Whether centered on God, gods, aliens, or energy forces, people have always been willing to believe and subsequently sacrifice for what they believe in. Here are a few of the strangest yet on record:
