Energy Eaters: The Different Face of Vampirism

Energy Eaters: The Different Face of Vampirism

The most common modern mental picture associated with vampires is a breathtakingly beautiful but innately scary man or woman with pale skin, pointy canine fangs, and hypnotic eyes. This physical form is then coupled with an insatiable desire to suck the blood of mortal humans in order to live on indefinitely in their perfect bodies. The recent surge in vampire popularity has led the rise in a small sect of people who wish to get their own energy boost from drinking the blood of a willing (and physically fit, clean, healthy) donor. A medical condition that reduces red cell production in the body or limits the amount of iron or hemoglobin in a person’s system can actually be a logical, scientific reason behind this desire to absorb the blood of another. However, there are other types of modern vampires who do not uphold the tradition of drinking blood of a human. Most real vampires in their small, secret covens actually do not drink blood in order to get the required energy they need from others. Another way to look at it is that an actual vampire is not an undead blood sucker but simply a mortal human that has energy issues and needs to feed on the energy of others just to be normal.

The Banff Springs Hotel

The Banff Springs Hotel

Situated within the Rocky Mountains in Banff, Canada, surrounded by majestic peaks and beautiful landscapes, you would be surprised to know that the Banff Springs Hotel, now called the Fairmont Banff Springs, is one very haunted place. In fact, it is considered to be one of the most haunted places in all of Canada. Built in 1887, the Banff Springs was once a railway hotel constructed by Bruce Price over the course of 1887 and 1888. From the beginning, the hotel had odd features about it. For one, when it was built for $250,000, an error resulted in the hotel’s orientation facing away from the mountains. Originally built with 100 rooms, that was expanded in 1902 to 200 rooms, and it was not until 1914 when the hotel was completely renovated so that the rooms faced the mountains, rather than the other way around. The hotel has been the site of unfortunate fires, and royal visits and is considered to be one of the best places to stay not only in Canada, but North America. The hotel is located right near Bow Falls, and thermal springs, which is where the hotel gets its name from. You can also walk from the hotel to the community of Banff, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Highway to Hell

Highway to Hell

The concept of an afterlife has eluded almost all humans and the civilizations and cultures of which they are a part. We are intelligent enough to wonder what happens after life but cannot come up with a way to find out and come back to tell everyone—at least not a way that most people want to try in hopes of coming back to the land of the living. Most religions on Earth have some type of monopoly on the idea of the afterlife and try to tell followers about what happens after death and how to insure that this second life is a good and happy one. What about the “bad” people though? Human beings learned long ago that people can be bad, evil, and malicious without being punished on Earth for their crimes against humanity. To make these victims feel better, most of them like to believe in the idea that those who break cultural rules or deny the basic human rights of others are sent to a place where they will receive their eternal punishment for being such bad people while alive. In the Christianity of Western civilization, this place which collects and jails wrongdoers for eternity is known as “hell.” Yet, Christians were certainly not the first ones to come up with the thought that there was a place which was strictly reserved for those who did wrong in life but did not repent or correct their ways. Countless societies and religions all over the world have their own idea of a place where people are judged upon their deaths to pay for sins or evils during their time on Earth. Let’s go down the “Highway to Hell” and see what other mythological places exist to punish malevolent mortals.

The Realm of the Fairies

The Realm of the Fairies

Fairies are some of the most popular creatures of myth today, specifically the collection of immortals living in the magical domain of Tir Na Nog from Irish folklore that have spread all over the world during the past few centuries. Calendars, books, paintings, and tons of other creative mediums showcase these tiny humanoid beings who have a supernatural realm of their own but love coming to the human world to interact with its inhabitants. However, what most people do not realize is that “fairy” is a rather general term that encompasses all the magical creatures of fae (or fay) folklore, including small, winged beings, gnomes, goblins, or specific ethereal individuals. The unique binding quality of these supernatural creatures is the fact they live in a parallel realm of magic, like to impose themselves on the lives of mortal humans even when they are invisible, and tend to be smaller in stature than the average adult. There are also several basic concepts about the fae that are useful for humans to know. They are caretakers of the natural world and prefer to stay in places that are untouched by humans or overrun by nature. Want to meet one? You aren’t alone.

In The Defense of The Paranormal

In The Defense of The Paranormal

More than any other field of study, the paranormal field gets scoffed. When I tell people that I write for a paranormal website I often get bombarded with comments like “do you actually believe in that stuff?” and half hearted “Oh, that’s cool. I guess”. But I believe that there is merit in studying the paranormal. By paranormal I mean the study of Extraterrestrials or UFOs, cryptozoology, and ghosts, though I will also be the first to admit that there are major flaws in how some areas of the field are researched.

Humanoid Creatures of the Supernatural Realm

Humanoid Creatures of the Supernatural Realm

Ancient mythology and legends are filled with countless beings that are not mortal or are not seen under normal circumstances in everyday places. To properly describe these creatures of myth, scribes and storytellers brought in descriptions of animals that lived in the immediate area to create a type of hybrid animal that the average person would be able to imagine even if he or she had not come into contact with it or the realm of the supernatural. However, these old stories are full of creatures and beasts that are remarkably human-like—in both appearance and intelligence. The mythical beings that resemble humans have a special name in that they are considered “humanoid.” The nature of the human aspect could vary. Many popular forms (particularly in the legends of classic cultures like the Greeks) would merely split the difference between a creature and a human where the creature would have the head and torso of a human but the bottom half of a particular animal. Other cultures would keep the primary structure of a human body (a single head with two arms followed by two legs to walk upon) but change the skin coloring, amount of hair, or basic proportional sizes of the body parts. Their human attributes made them mystical on a whole different level than other hybrid beasts.

Nukes Could Actually Be Earth’s Savior

Many often speculate how the world will end. The two leading contenders in this debate are that we will either kill ourselves by inciting a nuclear war or a giant asteroid from space will destroy humanity. Well as it turns out nuclear bombs could actually save us from asteroids.
