Monsters of Canada

Monsters of Canada

Even though many people tend to write off Canada as being either a vast and empty ice covered wasteland or simply a place with well mannered and nice natives, the nation itself has a very rich and long wearing traditions of legends and monsters. Some of the creatures come from the stories and myths from the Native Americans who still live in the country as part of the ethnic group known as the First Nations. However, some were brought over from the stories of European settlers and immigrants. This situation creates a very unique occurrence where an entire country is full of monsters that are from an extended mix of origins but still embraced by a modern population.

Trolls – From Ancient to Modern

Back in the day…

Trolls can be first see in Norse folklore, focused mainly in the early Scandinavian countries that the Vikings had total control over—such as Norway and Sweden. The word “troll” actually evolved over time and wasn’t the first name of this type of creature. In the Scandinavian languages, the word is actually a root for just about everything mystical and magical. “Trolleri” was considered to be a type of magic that was intended to harm others and is probably the primary source for the term “troll” for these mythological creatures who were considered to be particularly malignant, especially toward humans, in stories from folklore.

Top Ten Cryptids

Cryptozoology literally means the “study of hidden animals.” It is a new branch of science that searches out creatures which are thought to be nonexistent by popular biology, legendary, or considered to be extinct. Many skeptics exist on this topic; however, since the discovery of the coelacanth, a fish long thought to be extinct, in the early twentieth century made the idea of undiscovered animals hiding in our modern world a very popular thought. The animals which they study and for which they search were labeled as “cryptids” in 1983. Here are the top ten cryptids that cryptozoologists are currently investigating. If you have any evidence of these creatures, get it to your local cryptozoologist immediately!

Magical Femininity: Womanly Creatures That Kick Ass

Magical Femininity: Womanly Creatures That Kick Ass

Some people seem to think that the numerous patriarchal and patrilineal societies try to keep their structures in place by ignoring women. However, all throughout traditional mythology and legends there have been “special” creatures that embrace the feminine sex as their only gender-based form. These magical beings may take on the negative aspects of womanhood as viewed by men or adapt certain scary or intimidating creatures into their feminine physique, but the fact remains solid that the special women had a very strong hold over the mystical and paranormal. They may be mean. They may be strange. They may be downright weird or even frightening. Yet, their female power puts these beings in a special category unto themselves where they are powerful women in a male ruled magical, supernatural world.

The Ogopogo

The Ogopogo

While everyone knows about the Loch Ness Monster, not as many know about a similar mythical creature that apparently lives within Okanagan Lake in Canada. The Ogopogo, from many accounts, resembles the Loch Ness Monster, leading many crypto-zoologists to theorize that the two creatures may be of the same species. One interesting link between the two creatures is that they both lie along the same latitude and resemble each other greatly.

The Realm of the Fairies

The Realm of the Fairies

Fairies are some of the most popular creatures of myth today, specifically the collection of immortals living in the magical domain of Tir Na Nog from Irish folklore that have spread all over the world during the past few centuries. Calendars, books, paintings, and tons of other creative mediums showcase these tiny humanoid beings who have a supernatural realm of their own but love coming to the human world to interact with its inhabitants. However, what most people do not realize is that “fairy” is a rather general term that encompasses all the magical creatures of fae (or fay) folklore, including small, winged beings, gnomes, goblins, or specific ethereal individuals. The unique binding quality of these supernatural creatures is the fact they live in a parallel realm of magic, like to impose themselves on the lives of mortal humans even when they are invisible, and tend to be smaller in stature than the average adult. There are also several basic concepts about the fae that are useful for humans to know. They are caretakers of the natural world and prefer to stay in places that are untouched by humans or overrun by nature. Want to meet one? You aren’t alone.

Humanoid Creatures of the Supernatural Realm

Humanoid Creatures of the Supernatural Realm

Ancient mythology and legends are filled with countless beings that are not mortal or are not seen under normal circumstances in everyday places. To properly describe these creatures of myth, scribes and storytellers brought in descriptions of animals that lived in the immediate area to create a type of hybrid animal that the average person would be able to imagine even if he or she had not come into contact with it or the realm of the supernatural. However, these old stories are full of creatures and beasts that are remarkably human-like—in both appearance and intelligence. The mythical beings that resemble humans have a special name in that they are considered “humanoid.” The nature of the human aspect could vary. Many popular forms (particularly in the legends of classic cultures like the Greeks) would merely split the difference between a creature and a human where the creature would have the head and torso of a human but the bottom half of a particular animal. Other cultures would keep the primary structure of a human body (a single head with two arms followed by two legs to walk upon) but change the skin coloring, amount of hair, or basic proportional sizes of the body parts. Their human attributes made them mystical on a whole different level than other hybrid beasts.

Nymphs of Ancient Greece

Nymphs of Ancient Greece

Ancient Greek mythology has many legendary, magical creatures. One of the most popular of these creatures is certainly the nymph, or nymphai if they are collected as a group or there is more than one in a particular locale. Their name of “nymph” is actually related to the ancient Greek word for bride or young woman, indicating their role as lovers of gods and even mothers of heroes. However, they are known to take human lovers if the mortal is exceptional beautiful or skilled in some way like fighting or music. Nymphai are beautiful women who have the ability to change into natural objects based on which landscape they live in or become absorbed into the nature of their environments to live inside the natural vessel. Since they are so gorgeous, they draw the attention of many mortal men. However, it takes a very special man to entice them such as a god or demi-god. Most of the time though they prefer to be around satyrs so that they can party and celebrate without annoying mortals fawning over them. Nymphs are not completely magical beings though as they can die even though they live for a very long time in comparison to humans, and human women can be magically turned into nymphs by the gods.
